Digital converters are a crucial element for studio and live sound applications, as they not only enable taking sound from the analog to the digital domain but also interfacing between the many different formats of digital audio, such as ADAT, SPDIF, AES, MADI and so forth. There are three main types of converters: analog to digital converters, digital to analog converters, and digital to digital, usually coming in 19” rack or desktop formats. It’s important to note that audio interfaces are essentially converters, but here we are talking abouts units dedicated solely to format conversion, without necessarily involving computers in the process.
