Channel strips were pioneered and made famous by Solid State Logic - SSL, the first analog console manufacturer to include on each channel of their mixing desks a full-blown parametric equalizer and dynamics with a swappable compressor/expander section. Plug-ins will often recreate that style of workflow, but thanks to digital technology they have far surpassed what SSL did in the past to offer many different sound-shaping options.
